The American Red Cross reported that the recent severe winter weather has served to intensify an emergency blood shortage.
With the severe winter weather, blood drives were cancelled in just about every state where the Red Cross collects blood, As a result, nearly 15,000 blood and blood platelet donations have gone uncollected in January. Not only has there been a lack of donors, but the severe weather also affected the group’s ability to ship blood products across the country, which has affected delivery to hospitals in some areas.
The Red Cross said in a news release that the nation is currently facing the lowest number of donors in 20 years.
The next bloodmobile in our area is scheduled for February 7th from 1-6 at the Ramada by Wyndham in Indiana. For more information on where to donate blood, you can log on to www.redcrossblood.org
