The Pirates have signed former All-Star left-handed reliever Aroldis Chapman to a one-year $10.5 million deal to serve as David Bednar’s eighth-inning setup man. He was with the Royals last season before being dealt to Texas and winning a World Series with the Rangers.
The 35-year-old had a 2.25 ERA and six holds through nine games in the postseason. Overall, he was 6-5 with a 3.09 ERA in the regular season.
Chapman holds the record for fastest pitch ever, a 105.8 mile per hour heater thrown against the Padres in 2010, when Chapman was the ace of the Reds’ bullpen. He still averaged over 99 miles per hour last season.
