Ben Roethlisberger officially announced his return to the Steelers for the upcoming 2021-22 season during a news conference today.
Roethlisberger will enter his 18th season at the helm of the Steelers’ offense and he told reporters that the decision to return for another season was easy and that he is black and gold through and through.
He demonstrated his loyalty to Pittsburg after taking a pay cut so the team could sign draft picks and free agents – including returning wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster – to help fill gaps on the Steelers’ roster. A cut that he said was his idea.
Roethlisberger also talked about voluntary organized team activities (OTAs), which started this week. He said the rookies are exceeding expectations due to their willingness to put in extra work.
One rookie in particular, first-round pick Najee Harris, is really catching Roethlisberger’s eye. He said it’ll be exciting to see when Harris gets the full feel of the Steelers’ process.
Roethlisberger also broke down how he and newly-appointed offensive coordinator Matt Canada are connecting. He cited that Canada brings more of a modern-type of offensive play and while he’s more used to a shotgun-style playbook, Roethlisberger is willing to adjust over the offseason.
OTAs will continue this week for Pittsburgh.
