Third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes was 2-4 with a double for Indianapolis yesterday in his fourth rehab start. In his weekly injury update, Pirates’ director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said yesterday that starting pitcher Chad Kuhl has had no issues as he works his way back from a sore shoulder. Kuhl made another injury rehab start for Indianapolis on Tuesday, throwing 64 pitches in 3-and-a-third innings, giving up one run on one hit. Starter Trevor Cahill threw a side session yesterday and had no problems. Infielder/outfielder Philip Evans will soon start running the bases as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury. First baseman Colin Moran is a day or two behind Evans in his recovery from a groin injury.
A couple of former first-round draft picks are going to be out of action long-term. Outfielder Travis Swaggerty is sidelined after dislocating his shoulder, and is considering surgical and non-surgical options. And last year’s number one choice, infielder Nick Gonzalez, suffered a broken finger in a “freak accident” during a rundown, according to Tomczyk, and is out four to six weeks.
