The Steelers’ top two draft choices both signed their contracts yesterday, leaving only one draftee yet to sign.
Terms were not announced, but reports from several sources are that running back Najee Harris, the 24th overall selection in this year’s draft, gets four-year, $13,047 million deal with a $6.85 million signing bonus and a fifth-year team option.
Tight end Pat Freiermuth, the 55th overall selection, gets a reported rookie contract of four years at just under $6.03 million.
Center Kendrick Green, the third round pick out of Illinois, is the only unsigned draft pick.
On the first day of voluntary OTA’s, the Steelers about 75 percent of the Steelers roster showed up, which was a surprise to some because of the NFL Players’ Association’s stance against the supposedly voluntary workouts. Steelers players’ rep Cam Heyward said he and many of his teammates took part because of “a multitude of things” resolved in a meeting with the team’s upper management, including team owner Art Rooney II. Heyward said he expects a number of players who did not come yesterday to float in and out of the sessions in the coming weeks. Ben Roethlisberger was a participant yesterday.
All but two NFL teams have been given permission to host full-capacity games once the season starts in September. The league informed clubs Tuesday that 30 teams — minus the Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos — have received authorization to open their stadiums for opening weekend. In addition, teams will be allowed to host fans at training camps after practicing behind closed doors last year due to the pandemic.
