Indiana County 911 dispatched firefighters from Indiana, Homer City, Creekside and Clymer Fire Departments along with the borough and state police and Citizens’ Ambulance at 4:07 PM to two duplexes on Fifth Street between Gompers and School Streets. Coral-Graceton and Cherryhill fire crews were called in later to assist, and Plumville, Marion Center, Commodore and Black Lick fire departments were on stand-by detail.
Indiana third assistant chief Robert Henry said that the fire was between the two buildings and running up in that small alleyway and had already worked its way into the eaves. He said that crews were able to prevent the fire from spreading to the nearby Indiana Cycling Center store.
One of the residents of the student rental duplex, Lindsey Fisher of Huntingdon, said she was at a loss for words seeing the fire. She was with her parents at the time of the blaze.
Fire officials said that the roof eventually collapsed into the second floor, and with all the damage from the fire, smoke and water, the two buildings are a complete loss. The cause of the fire is unknown, but state police fire marshals were called in to investigate. Crews were called back out at 8:02 as the fire rekindled.
