Sidney Crosby helped the Penguins salvage a point last night against Vancouver, but a poor first period ultimately cost them the chance to win the game. Paul Steigerwald recaps the overtime loss.
In addition to Crosby’s two goals, the Penguins got a first-period score from Marcus Pettersson, his first of the season.
Crosby passed Hall of Famer Mike Bossy of the Islanders for 22nd place on the NHL’s all-time goal-scoring list. His 574 career goals are three behind another Hall of Famer, former teammate Mark Recchi.
Coach Mike Sullivan says the Penguins finally settled in during the second period and fought back against the talented Canucks.
Sullivan says he pulled goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic for Tristan Jarry to give the Penguins a jolt.
It was the Penguins’ fourth overtime or shootout loss of the season, but Sullivan says it’s hard to assess the team’s overall performance in OT.
Sullivan says forward Reilly Smith is being evaluated for an upper body injury. He left the ice in the first period and returned for one more shift before being ruled out for the rest of the game during the first intermission.
The Penguins travel to Carolina tomorrow night and then play the Seattle Kraken on Monday in Pittsburgh.
