The Homer-Center School Board on Thursday approved the preliminary budget for 2021-2022 school year, and while it contains a tax increase, the board says that the tax increase is not set in stone.
The budget comes to $18,434,492, but to balance the budget, the real estate taxes would need to go to 17.0044 mills. That represents a three percent increase in taxes. The vote to approve went 7-2 with Robert Valyo and Michael Bertig voting against the budget. Board member Vicki Smith called the tentative budget a “worst-case scenario” and said that the three percent tax increase is not set in stone.
As far as the state funding issue goes, Gerald Bertig said that they have met with both State Senator Joe Pittman and State Representative Jim Struzzi, and they are helping them get a meeting with the state Department of Education.
In other business, the board appointed Special Education Director Beth Genchur as the new elementary school principal. She takes over for Holly Rogeaux, who resigned to take an administrative position in the Blairsville-Saltsburg School District.
