BOYS BASKETBALL
River Valley put together a big second half to beat Marion Center on Cat Country 106.3. Jake Slebodnick has the story.
At Purchase Line, Homer-Center picked up its fourth win in a row. Here’s Todd Marino.
Portage beat United, 60-56. Owen Gouse led the Mustangs with 23 points. United was led by the Worthington brothers. Isaac had 28 points and Dmitri scored 12.
West Shamokin dropped Penns Manor, 54-32.
Conemaugh Valley edged Northern Cambria, 69-66.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Indiana grabbed a Section win over Franklin Regional, 54-39. Bella Antonacci led Indiana with 20 points. The Indians are 9-2 overall, 4-0 in 5A Section 1.
River Valley played out of conference against Elizabeth Forward and the Panthers came up short, falling 57-42. Ava Persichetti led River Valley with 17 and Alessia LaMantia added 10.
SWIMMING
A Heritage Conference showdown in the pool…Marion Center topped the Homer-Center teams. The Stingrays’ girls won, 99-71. Marion Center’s boys also won, 90-64.

Double winners included Brady Frazer in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke; Morgan Nagy in the 500 freestyle and 100 breaststroke; and Ava King in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Other first-place finishes include Trevor Cameron in the 200 IM and Landon Shoup in the 500 freestyle.
The Wildcats recorded three relay victories during the meet. The relay team of Cameron, Frazer, Shoup, and Dan Jones won the 200 medley relay. Grace Frazer, Vanessa Uher, King, and Nagy paired to win both the girls’ 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay.
Coaches Lori Nagy and David King are excited about the continued improvements of the Homer-Center swimmers. The team combined for a total of 76.03 seconds of time drops including several swimmers with double-digit time drops. The double-digit time drops include Leanne Cooper dropping 16.29 seconds in her 200 freestyle, Oshen Maratita dropping 10.46 seconds in his 200 freestyle, Landon Shoup dropping 20.01 seconds in the 200 IM; and Isaac Ditter dropping 11.12 seconds in the 500 freestyle.
(Homer-Center) also celebrated a swimmer competing in a new event for the first time. Alaina Bell competed in her first 200 IM and 100 butterfly.
The Homer-Center Wildcat swimmers will travel to Altoona next week on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, for a triple dual meet with the Mountain Lions and the Westmont Hilltop Hilltoppers.
