A group that has protested the vote of the Blairsville-Saltsburg school board to close Saltsburg Middle-High School has filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court.
The suit filed by Save Our Saltsburg Schools and its attorney, Joel Sansone, names the district as the main defendant. Sansone said the board neglected to consider closing the Blairsville school as an option for reconfiguration and he added that the district needed the two different sets of schools because of the size of the student body and the distance between the two population centers. He felt that when the board took the vote on April 22nd to close the schools, the civil rights of the district students were violated.
The lawsuit also seeks an emergency injunction that would halt the reconfiguration process.
As of right now, all that Blairsville-Saltsburg School District administration has done is to ask the public to fill out surveys on what the new name of the district would be and ask students for ideas on school colors and mascots. Sansone says that they will have a conference on Monday to prepare for the injunction hearing later this month.
Barring any legal decisions, the school would officially close on June 30th, the end of the district’s fiscal year.
