Pitt had an early lead last night against 8th-ranked North Carolina, but a first-half span of more than five-and-a-half minutes without a point spelled their doom as their outside shooting failed them and the Tar Heels’ inside physicality was too tough to overcome in a 70-57 Panthers loss.
Pitt shot only 30.9 percent from the field and could not get offensive rebounds against the muscular North Carolina forwards. Armando Bacot led the Tar Heels with 16 points and 10 rebounds. R.J. Davis had 15 points and Harrison Ingram pulled down 15 rebounds.
Freshman Bub Carrington led Pitt with 20 points. Blake Hinson had 11 but was only 4-of-16 from the field and 2-of-11 on three-pointers. Guillermo Diaz-Graham and Jayland Lowe each scored 10.
Coach Jeff Capel says his Panthers are young and learning how to play high-level college basketball.
Pitt lost its 16th straight game to a Top Ten team going back nine seasons. The Panthers are 9-5 and 0-3 in the ACC. They’ll play at Louisville on Saturday afternoon.
