The Pirates are off today and open a three-game series against the Cubs at Wrigley Field tomorrow night.
Director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk says Ke’Bryan Hayes has not experienced any discomfort in his injured left wrist as he’s taken soft swings this week. Hayes has missed more than a month since injuring the wrist on a swing in the first inning of the second game of the season, in Chicago.
Starting pitcher Chad Kuhl threw a side session yesterday as he works on returning from a sore shoulder. Tomczyk says the next step is to throw a simulated game, if Kuhl does not have any soreness from yesterday’s activity.
Pitcher Steven Brault may get to finally start throwing later in the week as he continues rehabbing a strained latissimus dorsi muscle in his back. Brault is on the 60-day injured list after getting hurt in spring training.
Former Pirates pitching coach Ray Miller passed away yesterday at the age of 76. He was on Jim Leyland’s staff during the Pirates’ playoff years in the early nineties. Miller spent ten years in the Pirates organization.
