Mitch Keller’s up and down season took a turn for the better last night in San Diego as the Pirates snapped a five-game losing streak.

Pirates’ manager Derek Shelton says for Mitch Keller, it’s all about control, and last night he had a good game plan: throw heat.
Shelton says Eric Gonzalez’s game-winning dash from second base on a grounder to second was an instinctive play that shows how the Pirates’ have to manufacture their runs.
The Pirates yesterday put outfielder Gregory Polanco on the ten-day injured list but did not say what the injury is. They recalled infielder/outfielder Hunter Owen from the taxi squad and started Philip Evans in right field last night, with Ka-ai Tom taking over in left field. Manager Derek Shelton also said that injured third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes played some soft toss catch and took about ten overhand pitches with the bat yesterday. Hayes has been out since the second game of the season with a left wrist injury.
There’s a good pitching matchup as the Pirates send JT Brubaker (2-2, 2.63 ERA) to the mound against the Padres’ Yu Darvish (3-1, 2.13 ERA. 7:45 airtime on WCCS.)
