One person died in a crash in Derry Township Friday afternoon.
Westmoreland County Coroner Tim Carson identified the victim as 72-year-old David Leonard of Derry. Carson’s report said that Leonard was a passenger in a red Nissan south on Route 217 when it collided head-on with a Jeep around 4:30 PM at the intersection with Industrial Boulevard. Leonard was airlifted to Latrobe Hospital where he was pronounced dead about an hour after the crash. The driver of the red Nissan, the Jeep and a blue Nissan also involved in the crash were not identified, but the driver of the red car was taken to a Pittsburgh-area hospital. While airbags were deployed, seat belts were not used in the crash.
The manner of death is pending further investigation, which is being handled by State Police. The road reopened around 9:00 last night.
