The 2020 Census statistics are in and they are showing that Pennsylvania will lose a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Right now, Pennsylvania has 18 seats in the House, but that will go down to 17 starting next year at the mid-term elections. Pennsylvania will also lose an Electoral College vote, going from 20 to 19. The number of Electoral College votes is determined by the total number of U.S. House and Seante members. This marks the 10th straight time that the state will lose a seat in congress.
Pennsylvania’s population did go up to 13,002,700, which is a gain of 2.4 percent, but it is far behind the nation’s growth at 7.4 percent. The lagging population growth could also result in reduced shares in federal money for Medicaid, social programs and infrastructure.
Indiana County’s 2020 population is 85,032, which is a decrease from 88,880 in 2010. That represents a decrease of approximately 4.33 percent over the 10-year span. The poverty rate for the county is 16.3 percent, while the rate of people that have a bachelor’s degree or better is 23 percent.
