Pittsburgh had control of Saturday’s contest against the New Jersey Devils from start to finish as they came away with a 4-2 win. The win not only gives the Pens their 31st win of the year, but it also allows them to sneak into first place in the eastern division.
Jeff Carter notched the opening goal halfway in the first period. Carter has now scored two goals in the last three games since coming to Pittsburgh. The Penguins would then score on a Power Play opportunity after Jared McCann took to the air and scored off a deflected shot by Kris Letang.
Bryan Rust and Sidney Crosby would each net their 20th goal of the season in the second and third periods. Crosby got his with 0.1 seconds left in regulation to ice the game.
While he didn’t get in the scoring column, defenseman Cody Ceci earned a point after assisting with Rust’s second period goal, giving him five points in as many games. He said the reason for the productive stretch is due to his comfort with the Penguins’ system.
The Penguins now go on to face the Boston Bruins, who are three points away from overtaking third place. Pittsburgh won the last series against the Bruins, two games to one, but Sidney Crosby knows that they will still present a tough matchup.
Pittsburgh’s lead in the east is dependent on the result between Washington and New York, who face-off tonight at 7 p.m.
Boston makes the trip to the Steel City tomorrow afternoon. Coverage on U92.5 FM and the U92 Sports Channel begins at 2 p.m. with puck drop at 3 p.m.
