Colin Moran drove in the go-ahead run in Sunday’s rubber match to help the Pirates beat the Milwaukee Brewers, 6-5, in 10 innings. This is not only the Pirates second series win of the season, but it’s the first time they beat the Brewers in Milwaukee since 2018. The win broke the 12-game losing streak in extra innings for the Pirates.
After the Brewers jumped out to a two-run lead in the first, Moran slugged a three-run home run to left to give the Bucs a 3-2 lead in the third. Milwaukee would climb back to tie the game in the bottom half, but Bryan Reynolds reclaimed the Pirates’ lead with a two-run home run in the seventh.
Brewers first baseman Daniel Vogelbach would drive in two later that inning to nod the game at 5, ultimately sending the game to an extra frame. Moran’s aforementioned double gave the Pirates a 6-5 lead in the 10th inning.
Richard Rodriguez threw two perfect innings in the ninth and tenth innings which paved way for him to pick up his first win of the season. Manager Derek Shelton commended Rodriguez after the game, saying his arsenal of pitches is becoming very useful.
Shelton also highlighted the efforts of the middle of the order stepping up and delivering in clutch moments.
He also said that the club’s toughness in fighting back to win these key matchups is important going forward.
The Pirates continue their roadtrip tomorrow as they travel to Detroit to face the Tigers in interleague play. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m.
