As a result of a fire that destroyed two modular classrooms and caused significant smoke and water damage to the main building, the Eisenhower Elementary School building will remain closed for the rest of the school year.
The closure was needed due to the extent of the damage done and the process needed to bring the facility back to working order. The fire early Friday morning started around 1:50 in the morning, and brought several fire departments from Indiana and Westmoreland County to assist at the scene. The school district was thankful that the fire happened at a time when there were no students on campus, and that the only losses are material and can be replaced.
While the building is closed, there are plans for the continuing education of students attending Eisenhower. With social distancing guidelines being taken into effect, the plan is to move Eisenhower’s fourth grade students to Horace Mann Elementary and the fifth grade students will attend class at the Indiana Junior High for the rest of the school year. That will start on Wednesday, April 21. On the 19th and 20th, Eisenhower elementary students will use the asynchronous remote instruction model, with activities posted by 9:30 each day. During that time, teachers will be getting rooms ready at their respective sites for the students’ arrival on Wednesday. All other buildings will operate on a normal schedule. More details on busing of students and parent pick up and drop off at the new locations will be released Monday.
In the meantime, the Indiana County Adopt-A-Teacher Facebook group is working on putting together a wish list for donations to replace some of the items that were destroyed in the fire. You can find the group by clicking on the link below.
