The Homer City Borough Council is preparing a tentative budget for the following year, and this year’s Halloween parade was approved with an additional road closure.
The council plans to approve a tentative 2019 budget at next month’s meeting. According to borough manager Rob Nymick, the council will consider a 1 mil or 2 mil increase.
A 1 mil, or $13 per household increase, would help pay for, among other costs, the purchase of a K9 vehicle for the police force. The potential increase, in addition to a grant expected from the USDA, would enable police chief Anthony Jellison to replace the current K9 vehicle, which had been blowing smoke as of September’s meeting. A 2 mil increase would be required to fund an additional part-time shift per week for the police force.
No matter what the council may decide, the council’s Matt Black says the borough keeps a tight budget:
“We keep a very trim budget. Very trim. I mean, little, if any waste. I mean, it’s all very well calculated.”
In other news, this year’s Halloween parade is set for Wednesday, October 31st at 5:30 PM. In addition to normal road closures, Chief Anthony Jellison requested also that the portion of East Wiley Street between Ridge Avenue and Greeley Street be closed for safety. Trick-or-treating will take place from 6 to 8 PM.
