Students attending Eisenhower Elementary School in the Indiana School District will have classes remotely today after a fire at the building early this morning.
Indiana Fire Association members were alerted at 1:50 this morning of a structure fire at a modular classroom at the school on School Street. Blairsville, Black Lick, Homer City, Cherryhill, Creekside and Clymer fire departments were also dispatched at that time, along with Greensburg and Latrobe fire departments from Westmoreland County. Commodore, Coral-Graceton, Plumville and Brush Valley fire departments were later called in for standby detail. Indiana fire officials say that the fire had extended to a second modular classroom, but crews were able to contain it to those two buildings and they made sure it would not spread to the main building. The two modular classrooms were pretty much totaled and were deemed unusable. The main school building did take on some smoke and water damage. Fire crews wrapped up at 5:21 this morning.
Superintendent Michael Vuckovich talked about what those modular classrooms were being used for.
No word yet on the cause of the fire. State police fire marshals have been called in to investigate.
Vuckovich said that for today, students will work remotely, but he wants to get the students back in the classroom as soon as possible.
Students and staff are not to report to Eisenhower today, and students are expected to be ready for their remote learning day at 9:00 AM. All other schools are to follow their normal schedules.
