The San Diego Padres put up five combined runs in the sixth and seventh innings to win, 6-2, over the Pirates on Monday.
Wil Myers drove in five RBIs for the Padres, four coming off Pirates reliever Luis Oviedo.
Trevor Cahill bounced back from a rough start in his season debut, striking out eight hitters over five innings pitched. Cahill allowed just one run in the first inning, but held the next 13 batters he faced hitless.
Phillip Evans went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI in the series opener. This now marks five multi-hit performances for him in eight starts this season. Adam Frazier would plate the second run for the Bucs with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
The Pirates fall to 3-7 on the season. Both teams return to PNC Park on Tuesday for game two with Chad Kuhl scheduled to start for the Pirates, and Blake Snell scheduled for San Diego.
