The Pirates notched their first series win on Sunday after beating the Chicago Cubs, 7-1.
J.T. Brubaker had another strong outing in his second start of the season. He earned the win after holding the Cubs to one hit while striking out four hitters over 5.1 innings pitched. Brubaker also went 1-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs.
Manager Derek Shelton said that he saw lots of improvement in Brubaker after Sunday’s outing. He credited him with taking a more direct approach with his pitches rather than getting hitters to chase.
He also said that it’s good for a team when a pitcher can contribute both on offense and defense.
Bryan Reynolds went 4-for-5, with all of his hits counting for singles in the game. Phillip Evans raised his batting average to .393 on the season after going 2-for-5 and Wilmer Difo iced the game with his first home run of the year in the seventh inning.
Pittsburgh returns to action Monday night to kick off a four-game series at home against the San Diego Padres. Former Pirate Joe Musgrove is set to take the mound for San Diego on Wednesday. It will be his first start since throwing a no-hitter on Friday.
Monday’s coverage on WCCS AM 1160 and 101.1 FM begins at 6:10 p.m.
