Indiana County’s seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate jumped in the month of February.
The new unemployment rate for the county is 8.2 percent for the month of February, which is an increase of seven-tenths of a percentage point. Comparing Indiana County’s rate to the state and federal rates, the statewide unemployment rate in February is 7.3 percent, with no change reported. The national rate went down one tenth of a percentage point to 6.2 percent.
Among the neighboring counties, Cambria has the lowest unemployment rate at 7.5 percent. Westmoreland County’s unemployment rate is at 7.7 percent and Jefferson County’s unemployment rate was 7.8 percent. Clearfield is tied with Indiana at 8.2 percent, and Armstrong County’s rate is the highest in the region at 8.5 percent.
The lowest unemployment rate in the state is 5.1 percent in Adams, Chester and Montour counties. The highest is Philadelphia County with 11.2 percent.
The total number of non-farm jobs in Indiana County increased by 1,300 to 29,100. Jobs went relatively unchanged over the month. The largest change was an increase in 800 jobs in the government sector, mainly due to IUP returning to class from winter break.
