The MLB Winter Meetings were busy yesterday in Nashville and the Pirates were among teams that generated a lot of conversation.
While no signings were made, General Manager Ben Cherington and Manager Derek Shelton both said the Pirates will be active in the starting pitching market. Cherington told reporters that they have quote, “talked about just about every starting pitcher on the market. We must be inclusive and exhaustive about it.” He also told MLB Network’s Hot Stove that they are looking at adding outfielders, although he did not mention any names.
Reports also say the Pirates are monitoring the market around former Cardinals and Orioles pitcher Jack Flaherty, who could be brought in on short-term deal if he is unable to find a longer commitment from another team.
The Winter Meetings continue today with the MLB Draft Lottery. The Pirates have a three percent chance at securing a second straight first-overall pick. Colorado, Oakland, and Kansas City have the best odds at 18.3 percent.

Two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani is rumored to have received multiple offers north of $500 million. He met with the Toronto Blue Jays yesterday, but the Los Angeles Angels are believed to still be in the mix. Other teams looking to sign Ohtani are the Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago Cubs and San Francisco Giants.
