The state Game Commission has released its estimated deer harvest report for the 2020-21 season, and it shows an increase of about 12 percent more than last year’s total.
Pennsylvania’s hunters took an estimated 435,180 deer, and the buck harvest, 174,780, set a new record for the antler restriction era. The Game Commission says about a quarter of the hunters in the state were successful.
The report does not break down the numbers by county, but by Wildlife Management Unit. Indiana County is primarily in WMU 2D and 2E, with a very small portion at the southern tip of the county in WMU 2C.
2D, which is basically the western half of the county along with portions of Jefferson, Armstrong, Clarion, Venango, and Butler counties, was down by about 1,188 animals. The buck harvest was 12,000, a thousand less than the previous year, and the doe harvest of 18,700 was off by 188. That’s 30,700 deer taken in 2D.
2E, which covers most of the eastern portion of the county as well as portions of Cambria and Clearfield counties, was up about a hundred in its buck harvest, to 6,500, and the doe harvest of 11,300 was an increase of 1,827, for a total harvest of 17,800.
