The Penguins needed just two goals to sweep the New York Islanders on Monday, winning by a score of 2-1.
Anthony Angello tallied his second goal of the season in the first period to put Pittsburgh on the board, and Jared McCann scored an insurance goal within the final two minutes. New York’s only goal came halfway through the second period, as Matt Martin converted on a Power Play opportunity.
The Penguins held the Islanders in check on even strength opportunities, despite losing goalkeeper Tristan Jarry in the second period to an upper-body injury. He is undergoing further evaluations. Meanwhile, Casey DeSmith filled in and made 19 saves on 20 shots against.
The win not only gives the Penguins their second consecutive sweep, but it also ties them with New York for second in the eastern division with 48 points each.
After the game, Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan said that the team is finding success due to factoring in speed on offense.
In addition, he credits the team’s success to keeping it simple on the ice.
The Penguins now hit the road for a seven-game road trip beginning on Thursday against the Boston Bruins. John Marino said that winning at home gives them an upper-hand before heading out for an extended period of time.
Airtime for Thursday’s game on U92.5 FM is 6 p.m.
