The Pirates announced on Friday that veteran infielder Todd Frazier has opted out of his contract and will become a free agent, per Pirates beat writer Jake Crouse.
Frazier, 35, signed a minor league contract in February and the reason for him opting out is not clear, but it is rumored that he was not going to be selected to the Opening Day roster despite posting a .250 average in Spring Training.
General Manager Ben Cherington said that Frazier was aware that making the MLB roster was not guaranteed and said that the team was excited to have him at camp.
Frazier’s departure could allow utility man Phillip Evans, who performed well before his season-ending injury in 2020, to platoon at first base with Colin Moran, but Cherington, nor manager Derek Shelton, have released any details yet.
