On the night before the school year starts, the Indiana School Board met and passed several items, including a new policy for social media use.
The social media policy is a new one for the district, and addresses how social media maintained by the district can be used by the students, staff and administration of the district. The policy can be found by clicking here. The policy had at one point also included members of the school board, but John Barbor said that the school board was removed from the policy on the advice of the district solicitor. He said that the board already has protections in place, and any rules put in the policy for school board members would violate those protections.
Barbor also said that the same punishments for students and staff can not be handed down to the school board, but he added that there are already standards in place for board member misconduct.
In other business, the board approved the contract for Assistant Superintendent Robert Rizzo, along with his goals and the performance evaluation tool. Concerning his contract, though, Rizzo does have a pay freeze in the second year of his contract as a cost-saving measure, which Rizzo agreed to. Superintendent Michael Vukovich volunteered and the board approved a similar pay freeze in the second year of his contract. Vukovich said the move reflects his leadership, saying that if someone is expected to make that sort of sacrifice, he should be able to do the same.
