Representatives with APSCUF, the union representing coaches in the state system are continuing to highlight job security as a main focus item during the recent negotiation session that wrapped up yesterday.
In the second day of the two-day session, APSCUF and PASSHE discussed other topics like consolidation issues, bereavement leave and compensation, but APSCUF officials say that the job security issues they brought up on Tuesday have not been addressed yet. Coach Executive Leader John Gump said in a statement that the collective bargaining agreement still does not have the language needed to prevent “arbitrary separations”, saying that a coach being fired on a whim is a major problem. He added that the union is “asking for respect and assurance that when we do a good job – when we provide opportunities and guidance for our student-athletes – our jobs are secure.” Union president Dr. Kenneth Mash also said that evaluations need to be used in the contract renewal process.
Talks are scheduled to resume on January 11th and 12th. The coaches will work under the terms of the old contract that expired on June 30th of this year. Meanwhile, negotiations on a faculty contract are scheduled for next Monday and Tuesday.
