State Representative Jim Struzzi is looking to rename a road in Indiana County in honor of the people of Robindale, a town that was destroyed by the Johnstown Flood of 1977.
Struzzi’s house bill 1866 would rename a portion of Power Plant Road that runs between Routes 711 and 56 as the Robindale Memorial Highway. The town is located on a bend of the Conemaugh River between Seward and New Florence in Indiana County. Struzzi said that the story of the people of Robindale would recognize the challenges that community faced and the fortitude of a local community. On top of the ’77 Johnstown Flood, the community faced two other floods and two tragic mining accidents. While those incidents are a part of the town’s history, Struzzi said in a news release that the people who lived there “are a resilient community linked by these memories and a commitment to honoring their past in a positive way,”
The town was founded in the 1900s, created out of the Conemaugh Smokeless Coal Company.
