Diontae Johnson apologized to his teammates yesterday for walking away without making a play on a fumble Sunday against Cincinnati, afterward telling reporters he owned up to what he did and promised, “it won’t happen again.”
Johnson walked through a block he was supposed to make on DJ Turner, then turned and walked off the field as Turner scooped up Jaylen Warren’s fumble at the Bengals’11-yard line and returned it to the 35. Johnson said he knows better than to play like that.
Steelers teammates seemed to want to move on, accepting Johnson’s apology and turning their attention to preparations for this Sunday’s game against the Cardinals, and the ongoing transition to the new offensive leadership of coordinator Eddie Faulkner and play caller Mike Sullivan.
Quarterback Kenny Pickett says the offensive output against the Bengals shows the Steelers are on the right track.
Tight end Pat Freiermuth was a weapon for Pickett in the middle of the field, which is an element the offense has been missing. He says when the Steelers complete passes between the hashmarks, it opens up the outside as well.
Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick was a full practice participant yesterday, returning to action after missing the last four games with a hamstring injury. He also practiced fully last week but did not play on Sunday. Nose tackle Montravious Adams was also back to full participation. He’s missed three straight games with an ankle injury. Wide receiver Calvin Austin III was out with an ankle injury.
