The Penguins dug themselves out of a hole last night in Nashville, but a questionable breakaway goal by the Predators gave them the win. Paul Steigerwald has the recap.
A seething coach Mike Sullivan was combative with the officials all night long, including on Nashville’s second goal in the first period, when play should have been stopped on a delayed penalty and was not. He also took issue with the drop of the puck beginning the overtime and with what was described as a “blatant” interference on Sidney Crosby which led to the game-winning goal.
Sullivan was happy with the way the Penguins fought back after trailing 2-0 at the end of the first period.
Defenseman John Ludvig had an assist and a fight last night, falling one goal short of a Gordie Howe hat trick. He fought to a draw with Predators tough guy Michael McCarron in the second period. Sullivan likes Ludvig’s gritty style of play.
The Penguins visit Tampa Bay tomorrow night. With the overtime loss, the Penguins have fallen into an eighth-place tie with New Jersey in the Metro Division, but they are only two points behind third place Philadelphia. The New York Rangers lead the division with 31 points, followed by Carolina with 26.
The Penguins yesterday waived defenseman Will Butcher. The veteran hasn’t played in any games after being injured while working out in the summer. If he clears waivers after 2 PM today, he can be assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
