Coaches working in the State System of Higher Education are voicing their concerns about job security during negotiations between their union and the stste system schools.
PASSHE and APSCUF met for the first of a two-day negotiation session yesterday. APSCUF’s leadership made sure that the issue was at the forefront of talks yesterday, saying that while other topics have been covered in previous talks, it is time to get to the job security concerns they have. Coach Executive Leader John Gump said that the State System has refused to put language into the new contract that would “prohibit arbitrary, capricious, or discriminatory decisions about coach employment.” Other items the union wants to see in the agreement include tying coach evaluations to contract renewals and shortening the probation period for roll-over contracts, which is five years.
APSCUF President Kenneth Mash said that coaches deserve to have the same job security enjoyed by other public employees and should not have to worry about losing their job on a whim, even if their performance evaluation is solid, and they should have the opportunity to make corrections based on the evaluations.
Currently, the coaches are working under the terms of a contract that expired June 30th of this year. Negotiations are expected to continue today.
