Yesterday was the end of firearms bear hunting season and in Indiana County, preliminary numbers are looking lower than elsewhere in the state.
According to preliminary numbers from the state Game Commission, 24 bears were harvested in Indiana County through the four-day season. State-wide, 1046 bears were taken between November 18th and 21st. A majority of the bears were taken on the first day of the season, with a total of 696 harvested. Comparing Indiana County to the rest of the state, seven states have reported no bears being harvested, while Tioga County had 141 bears reported and checked.
No word on what the biggest bear claimed in Indiana County, but the largest bear for this year so far is from Schulkyll County, with someone bagging a 645 pounder. After that was Monroe County reporting a 630 pound bear being harvested.
Just a reminder that for several areas of the state, extended bear season will continue until December 9th at the very latest. Meanwhile, rifle deer season begins this Saturday.
