Indiana County firefighters were busy with 11 brush fires reported across the county on Monday.
One of the larger fires was reported along Route 403 in Pine Township. Pine Township firefighters were first called out at 7:42, with Nicktown, Cherryhill, Marion Center, Clymer, Commodore, and Coal Run-McIntyre fire departments dispatched 25 minutes later. Officials with the Pine Township fire department say that the brush fire destroyed between 20 and 50 acres of farm and wood land. The cause was a downed power line still charged that set off the brush. No one was hurt. Pine Township Chief Keith Muir and State Forestry officials will head back out to the site today to further investigate how much damage was done.
Ten other brush fires were reported in the county, starting at 10:50 with a call on Route 119 North in East Mahoning township. The bulk of the calls were between 1:00 and 5:00 PM, with calls in Cherryhill, Young, Rayne, Canoe and Pine Townships, and five of those fires were in Young Township alone. Fire departments were either on the scene of the fire or on standby detail.
Indiana County has now seen 43 brush fires this year so far.
