On Monday night, the Indiana Area School Board approved by a 7-2 vote taking the next step in having students return to full-time instruction.
The recommendation came from District Superintendent Mike Vuckovich after the board had tasked him with surveying parents, and preparing a motion for Monday night’s meeting. Based on updated CDC guidelines that would allow three feet of social distancing between students, the motion presented would provide students in grades 7-12 the opportunity to attend four days a week, with Friday being a remote learning day. The remote learning day on Friday allows the school buildings to undergo deep cleaning if needed.
Ute Lowery and Cinda Brode voted against the motion, saying that they wanted the district to stay on their current plan to keep students safe and healthy, and not risk a resurgence of Covid-19 cases in the district. The majority of school board members agreed that the students had suffered academically and needed to return to in-person instruction as soon as possible.
The new plan will begin on April 6th. Parents still have the option to keep their children in the two-day a week hybrid plan.
