Three years ago, Penns Manor made it to the state’s Final Four, falling to Philadelphia West Catholic, 50-48, in overtime.
Tonight, the Comets are back for another stab at making it to Hershey to play in the AA state championship game. This time, they will take on Neshannock on Neshannock’s home floor, under the state’s revamped playoff format that carries home court advantage, where covid protocols allow it, all the way through the state semifinals.
Penns Manor thrashed Cambridge Springs, 53-25, on Friday night, leading the ball game, 42-6, at halftime. Neshannock survived Windber, 51-48.
The 18-6 Comets feature a balanced attack led by seniors Kassidy Smith and Anna Peterman, junior Megan Dumm, and sophomores Deja Gillo and Kate Hnatko. They play stout defense and patient half-court offense, and look for points in the transition game.
Like Penns Manor, the 17-2 Lancers are not especially tall, and play hard-nosed defense with the ability to toss in three-pointers.
Comets coach Jason Miloser knows they’re in for a battle.
Kassidy Smith was a key member of the Comets’ 2018 team, as a freshman. She is looking for another shot at Hershey.
