Pitt shot only 8-for-28 from beyond the three-point line, and the Panthers were only 18-of-32 from the foul line, but still they outscored Florida Gulf Coast, 86-74. Freshman Bub Carrington scored 19 points, Blake Hinson scored 18, and Ishmael Leggett had 17. Freshman Jaland Lowe added 12 points for the Panthers.
Coach Jeff Capel says Florida Gulf Coast was bigger and more talented than Pitt’s first two opponents, so it was a good challenge for his young team.
Capel says the Panthers are learning game-by-game early in this season.
Pitt is 3-0 and will host Jacksonville on Friday night.
