Already facing a tough challenge with multiple players on the injured list, the Penguins’ woes continued as they fell to the New Jersey Devils, 3-2, on Thursday.
New Jersey tacked on two goals within two minutes in the second period to boost their lead to 3-0, while goalie Scott Wedgewood held the Pens scoreless throughout the first 30 minutes. Jake Guentzel got the Pens on the board on a power play opportunity at the 19:47 mark in the second and Bryan Rust brought them within one with 0:04 remaining in the game, but that would be all the Penguins would post as the Devils iced the puck in the last few seconds to seal their win.
After the game, head coach Mike Sullivan said that while the Penguins had momentum in the second, they need to do a better job of taking advantage on opportunities.
Sullivan also said that now it’s all about moving forward and reacting the right way after a tough loss.
One way is by showcasing resilience and leadership.
The loss puts Pittsburgh just one point ahead of Boston, who beat Buffalo on Thursday, but they still hold third place in the eastern division. They look to rebound and take game two on Saturday.
