Baseball America released its preseason predictions early Thursday afternoon and while the Pirates may not have received multiple honors, third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes was picked to finish first in the National League’s “Rookie of the Year” category.
Hayes beat out outfielder Dylan Carlson (Cardinals) and hard-throwing Sixto Sanchez (Marlins) in the poll and, if he wins the award at the end of the season, he will be the first Pirates rookie to win it since Jason Bay took home the award in 2004.
In 2020, Hayes hit .376 with 5 home runs and 11 RBIs. ESPN predicts he will finish the 2021 season with a .272 average, 13 home runs and 64 RBIs.
