The Steelers will open their preparations today for Sunday’s game against Green Bay, with coach Mike Tomlin hoping the team can get on a roll and his offense can take a few more steps forward.
At his weekly news conference, Tomlin said first round draft choice Broderick Jones will likely get his second straight start at right tackle on Sunday, and the team is listing second round pick Joey Porter at the top of the depth chart at left cornerback, ahead of Levi Wallace.
Tomlin said getting defensive lineman and elder statesman Cam Heyward back in the lineup last week is a great sign.
Tomlin also said having coordinator Matt Canada on the sideline rather than in a skybox seemed to work for his struggling offense.
The Steelers will be without injured inside linebacker Cole Holcomb for the rest of the season. Elandon Roberts and Kwon Alexander had been rotating with Holcomb and they’d formed a highly effective trio at what has been a troublesome position for several seasons.
Tomlin said it was a great arrangement while it lasted, but Roberts and Alexander are very capable, and the Steelers’ depth at the position is solid.
The coach said Minkah Fitzpatrick’s hamstring injury is “improving” and nose tackle Montravious Adams has an ankle injury that the team is monitoring as practices begin today for Sunday afternoon’s game.
