Preliminary hearings are scheduled this afternoon for an uncle and nephew who fought each other two weeks ago. 58-year-old Charles Veith of Strongstown is accused of shooting at and stabbing his nephew, 27-year-old Robert Smith of Starford during an altercation at two locations on July 25th.
Veith is charged with three felonies, two for aggravated assault and one for illegal possession of a firearm. Additional offenses include simple assault, terroristic threats, recklessly endangering another person, and harassment. Smith is charged with simple assault and harassment.
Police say that during the fight at Veith’s home along route 403, he pulled a knife and attacked Smith, who suffered a slash wound to the chest and a stab wound to his shoulder. Smith fled to another home, along Country Meadows Lane, but Veith followed him. Smith hit him in the face with a large can and ran to the rear of the home and Veith fired a shot at him, missing Smith but hitting a vacant mobile home next door. Smith then snuck up behind Veith and struck him in the head with a piece of Wood. Veith then went home and called police.
Both Veith and Smith are scheduled before District Judge Guy Haberl at 1:30 this afternoon. Both were unable to post bond and remain in custody at the Indiana County Jail.
