State police have arrested a man from Hempfield Township for an incident last night in Center Township and Indiana Borough.
Troopers say at 5:19 PM, they tried to pull over 34-year-old Terry Ely, Jr. of Westmoreland City along Route 119 north in Center Township after discovering that he was wanted on a warrant and had a suspended driver’s license and had a passenger with him at the time. He failed to yield to police and led troopers on a high-speed chase Northbound on Route 119, getting off at the Wayne Avenue exit and going on to Old Route 119 South. After losing sight of the suspect, the troopers discovered a three-vehicle crash on Old Route 119 just south of Lucerne Road Extension. Police also discovered that he fled the scene, going to Martin’s Diesel Garage and stealing an unlocked dump truck belonging to Weimer Trucking. An in-cab camera and tracking device recorded the theft, and police were able to trace the truck to the area of North 5th Street and Burns Avenue. Police found Ely in the home of the passenger that was with him around 7:00 last night.
Troopers say he was found to be under the influence of a controlled substance at the time of his arrest, and that he was also injured in the crash. He was treated for his injuries at Indiana Regional Medical Center. Police found three stamp bags and some prescription medicine in the car that crashed.
Ely is facing multiple drug and driving charges along with DUI, fleeing or eluding police, and related crimes. He is now in Indiana County Jail on $50,000 cash bail. A preliminary hearing is set for November 21st at 10:15 AM.
