The Pirates’ Ke’Bryan Hayes won his first Rawlings Gold Glove last night as the best third baseman in the National League. He ended the ten-year Gold Glove winning streak of Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado.
Hayes committed only six errors last season and led MLB third basemen with 21 defensive runs saved, which was fourth in all of baseball at any position.
He is the twentieth Pirate to win a Gold Glove and the first third baseman. He’s joined on the NL Gold Glove team by Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner, shortstop Dansby Swanson, and left fielder Ian Happ, D’backs catcher Gabriel Moreno and first baseman Christian Walker, Padres right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. and utility player Ha-Seong Kim, Rockies center fielder Brenton Doyle, and Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler.
The American League Gold Glove team includes Rangers catcher Jonah Heim, first baseman Christian Walker, second baseman Andrés Giménez, right fielder Adolis Garcia, Blue Jays third baseman Matt Chapman, center fielder Kevin Kiermaier, and pitcher Jose Berrios, Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe, Guardians left fielder Steven Kwan, and Astros utility player Mauricio Dubon.
PIRATES NOTES
The Pirates have declined their option on left-handed reliever Jarlin Garcia, who suffered nerve damage in his left bicep area last March and ended up never throwing a pitch for the Bucs.
