Saturday’s game against San Jose was so strange for the Penguins that Sidney Crosby had no goals, one assist, and only one shot on net…yet they won, 10-2.
Reilly Smith, Jake Guentzel, and Evgeni Malkin scored two goals each; Smith Guentzel, and Bryan Rust each had four-point games, and Kris Letang, Matt Nieto, and Vinnie Hinostroza each scored their first goals of the season as the Pens finally broke out, although it was against the NHL’s worst team.
After the game, coach Mike Sullivan was already looking ahead to tomorrow night’s game at Anaheim.
Jake Guentzel’s two goals were the 200th and 201st of his career, in just 463 games. Sullivan says Guentzel’s skills and skating ability aren’t flashy, but he is one of the best players in hockey.
The Penguins play the Ducks in Anaheim tomorrow night in the second game of their three-city California tour. They will play the Kings in LA on Thursday.
