FOOTBALL
For the second year in a row, the Heritage Conference will have the District 6 Class A football champion, with Friday’s two semifinal games featuring rematches of Week Ten of the regular season.
Top seed and defending champion Northern Cambria will host Coal Bowl rival Cambria Heights. Northern Cambria won in Week Ten, 28-11.
Colts coach Sam Shutty said after Friday’s win over Marion Center that his team will have to focus this week.
The other semifinal Friday will be Penns Manor at Purchase Line. The Comets won in Week Ten, 22-19.
Red Dragons coach Matt Falisec says obviously there’s a lot at stake.
Comets coach Bill Packer expects a tough week.
The Northern Cambria/Cambria Heights matchup will be on Renda Digital TV, presented by Smith Coal & Oil and by Barnesboro American Legion Post 508.
The Purchase Line/Penns Manor game will be on both Cat Country 106.3 FM and on Renda Digital TV, presented by Tate’s Supermarket and the Clymer Slovak Club, with airtimes for both at 6:15.
CROSS COUNTRY
At the PIAA state cross country championships in Hershey on Saturday, both the United and Marion Center girls cross country teams finished in the top ten. United was seventh, with 255 points, while Marion Center was ninth, with 276 points. The top runners for each team finished just one second apart. Senior Lydia Miller of Marion Center finished 61st and freshman Olivia Henning of United finished 62nd. United also placed sophomore Chloe Stiles 77th and sophomore Sara Gornick 99th.
On the boys’ side of Class A, United sophomore Colton Henning finished 76th. No Heritage Conference school had a boys team running at states.
VOLLEYBALL
Before the basketballs start bouncing, there is one Heritage Conference volleyball team still playing. Homer-Center fell 3-1 to West Branch in the District 6 championship game on Saturday but the Wildcats are still alive in the state tournament. They will open with a first-round game at District 9 champion Elk County Catholic tomorrow night.
