At a zoom meeting on Wednesday night, representatives with the Blairsville Community Development Authority and the Indiana County Office of Planning and Development presented a draft plan on how to turn the now-vacant Murphy Lot in downtown Blairsville into a place for the community.
The former G.C. Murphy Building was demolished in 2020, as it was considered a public safety hazard, leaving a 12,800 square foot lot that must remain a green space for seven years before it can be redeveloped for commercial use. The long-term goal for the lot will include a walkway and fountain, benches, areas to play bocce and marbles, and picnic tables. Josh Krug with the Office of Planning and Development said that first work on the project could start as soon as this summer.
The next step will be fundraising for the project in various forms, including possible online campaigns and grant acquisitions, and seeking volunteers to not only work on the lot, but to help out on the organizational side by volunteering to be part of committees or subcommittees.
More information can be found on the Murphy Lot Project’s Facebook page, or by contacting the BCDA or the Office of Planning and Development.
