Former Penguins center Adam Johnson died Saturday evening at the age of 29 following an on-ice collision during a game in England. Johnson was playing for the Nottingham Panthers in the Elite Ice Hockey League when an opponent’s skate sliced his neck during the second period.
Fans were told to leave the arena, and Johnson received emergency treatment on the ice before he was taken to Northern General Hospital in Sheffield, England, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Johnson appeared in 13 total games with Pittsburgh between 2018 and 2020. His first – and only goal – with the Penguins came in a 7-4 win over Minnesota on Oct. 12, 2019. In college, he was a part of the University of Minnesota-Duluth Frozen Four team in 2017.
The Penguins said in a statement on Twitter (X) that quote, “it was an honor to watch him fulfill his dream of playing in the [NHL].” While no plans have been announced, the Penguins could honor Johnson with a moment of silence prior to tonight’s game against the Anaheim Ducks at PPG Paints Arena.
