The Penguins put together their best effort of the season and in the process stopped Colorado’s fifteen-game road winning streak, which went all the way back to last March. Reilly Smith scored two goals in the first period – his fourth and fifth of the season – and Tristan Jarry made 31 saves on the night as the Pens shut out the high-flying Avalanche, 4-0. It was the Avs’ first loss in seven games this season, and the Penguins snapped a three-game losing streak and are now 3-4.
Lars Eller scored his first Penguins goal in the second period and Sidney Crosby added his fourth of the season in the third.
Coach Mike Sullivan liked the way his team played in front of the net on both ends of the ice.
Reilly Smith says the Penguins haven’t been playing well, but things are beginning to come together.
The Penguins have lost backup goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic to an undisclosed lower body injury. Sullivan says Nedeljkovic is out “week-to-week” and has been placed on long-term injured reserve, meaning that the earliest he can return is November 19th. Goalie Magnus Hellberg was recalled from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton after the morning skate on Wednesday.
The Penguins host the Ottawa Senators tomorrow night.
