The Steelers opened their practice preparations for Sunday’s game against the Jaguars minus cornerback Levi Wallace, who was listed with a foot injury. Inside linebacker Cole Holcomb was a full participant despite coach Mike Tomlin saying on Tuesday that Holcomb suffered an ankle sprain in the win over the Rams in LA on Sunday. Offensive lineman Nate Herbig was out due to illness and guard Isaac Seumalo had the day off for rest.
Quarterback Kenny Pickett says the Steelers’ offense is coming along, even with the loss of tight end Pat Freiermuth, who is on injured reserve with a hamstring injury.
Pickett says the Jaguars’ defense is aggressive and he will have to find some holes in their secondary, perhaps on shorter underneath routes.
Steelers players don’t seem willing to back off on the badgering that caused two taunting penalties against them on Sunday. Najee Harris said yesterday the officials are “a little too soft” and the trash talk between wide receivers and defensive backs happens on every play. Harris drew a warning early in Sunday’s game about his own trash talk. George Pickens and Diontae Johnson were later flagged for taunting.
NFL Week Eight begins tonight with the Tampa Bay Bucs playing the Bills in Buffalo.
49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is in concussion protocol and will likely miss Sunday’s game against the Bengals. Sam Darnold is taking first team reps in practice this week.
